The amount of donation has to be decided by the adoptive parents themselves and there is no obligation. Hospitalization and similar medical treatment expenses are not covered. So how can one get started? One must, first of all register with us (registration is FREE), provide a copy of an approval notice of I-600A petition, a copy of home-study, proof of marriage and of sound financial status. We in Pakistan make decision on the basis of these documents. If approved, they will be asked to register with us as well as with institutions like orphanages, hospitals, Christian missions etc. We will provide registration forms with a corresponding list of documents to be submitted to each of these institutions. This registration puts them on a waiting list. What Happens When a Child Becomes Available for Adoption? As soon as a child becomes available for adoption, we will inform the adoptive parents and provide them with details on health, age and sex of the child. In some exceptional cases we can also provide photos or a video whichever possible under the circumstances. The adoptive parents must inform us about their decision as per instructions according to the prevailing situation (generally within 24 hours or less). If adoptive parents agree to take the child, we will initiate local administrative procedures on behalf of the adoptive parents to acquire custody and file the case in the court for adoption. When Do the New Parents Need to Travel to Pakistan? They can do so whenever they feel like. "Adoption" in Islam Islam does not permit "adoption". It does however strongly emphasize in helping the orphans and destitutes. Qur'aan, in many surahs, has repeatedly asked the muslims to help the orphans with all the resources in hand. One of these resources is "Guardianship". Under the family law of Pakistan, one can only be granted the "Guardianship" of an orphaned or abandoned child. What does "Guardianship" mean for an American Muslim? As legal guardian, one can take custody of the child and be answerable for the well being of this child. US Immigration law accepts this guardianship from Pakistani court. On this basis an immigrant visa for the child is processed. Once the child arrives in the US, s/he has to be adopted according to the adoption laws of the state of adoptive parent's residence. |
*It is important to note that, in general, adoption of child is not granted in absentia. The court will make a decision only when the adoptive parents have appeared at least once before the judge. **To file I-600, and for child's immigrant visa interview, the US citizen must be present in Pakistan. ***To process the immigrant visa, consular section may also decide to go for field investigations and verify the authenticity of documents and the adoption process. In such a case more time may be required. |
